PUPILS getting off the school bus in the morning don't usually merit a second glance from their fellow pupils.

However, Dumbarton Academy pupil Amy Irvine and 15 of her high school friends definitely turned a few heads when they enjoyed a cool ride to school after she came out tops in a radio station draw.

The 12-year-old, who lives in Corissa Drive in Dumbarton, came out of the hat on DJ George Bowie's breakfast show and won the trip to school in the Bonkers Bus. Every weekday morning on the breakfast show the DJ invites a pupil from different schools to entertain his audience – normally by telling a joke or singing a song. At the end of each week the participating children's names go into a draw and first out wins the drive to school for themselves and a group of their classmates and friends.

Amy's entry was unusual in two respects; she didn't sing or tell a joke, and almost all of children entering the draw are usually primary pupils.

Amy said: "I applied for the cool ride to school when I was in P7 but there is such a big waiting list that I was nearly finished first year by the time it came around. I told a story live on air about a man who was swimming from LA to Tokyo after getting an idea from watching someone on Britain's Got Talent."

Amy's story was really unusual as it was filled with sound bites from songs to represent lines in the story she was telling.

It wasn't just pupils who were impressed, as the schoolgirl revealed: "The bus was full of lights and there were mini-Ipads so we could pick our own music. Some of the teachers came out and took some pictures when we arrived at the school."

Mum Marie added: "Amy and her friends loved it."
