POLICE have praised residents in the Vale for helping tackle a fire deliberately set in the close of a block of flats.

The blaze was discovered in the early hours of last Wednesday morning. The contents of a cellar within the close at 310 Main Street in Alexandria had been set alight and residents in the block quickly moved to tackle the flames and contact the emergency services.

The police and firefighters from Scottish Fire and Rescue Service attended the blaze and following a joint investigation the incident has been put down to wilful fire raising. The contents of the cellar were destroyed and the interior was left damaged by smoke.

The fire was discovered around 1am on Wednesday, May 11.

Detective Constable Alistair Bouttell from Clydebank CID said: "This is the access area to private dwellings, and if it wasn’t for the quick and decisive actions of residents, the effects of this fire could have been a lot worse. I am appealing to anyone who may have seen or heard anything in the area to get in touch with officers at Clydebank Police Office on 101 or alternatively, via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where information can be given in confidence."
