A DUMBARTON man with visual impairment is “absolutely thrilled” after winning the West Dunbartonshire’s Photograph of the Year competition.
This year’s contest, organised jointly by West Dunbartonshire Council and West College Scotland, received a record number of entries.
Kevin Murney, 48, won £300 of camera equipment from sponsors Calumet and hands-on experience with local photographer Stewart Cunningham of Great Scot Photography for his image of Dumbarton’s Old Bridge.
His win is even more special as he suffers from visual impairment and has wet macular degeneration, the largest cause of sight loss in the developed world.
Sadly, he has lost the central vision in his left eye and has had injections to his right eye to save his sight.
Mr Murney said: “I am absolutely thrilled to win this competition as the standard of the shortlisted pictures was really high.
“The Calumet vouchers will go a long way to adding to my photography equipment and I’ve been saving for a new lens for my camera for months now, so the vouchers will go towards that.
Mr Murney’s black and white picture showing fog rising from the water impressed judges with its depth and framing.
The two runner up pictures were an image of the Maid of the Loch bathed in the Northern Lights and an aerial shot of the scenery of Bowling Basin.
The ten shortlisted photos were liked on the council’s Instagram page more than 470 times.
