An ambulance caught fire on Saturday afternoon while returning to its base at the Vale of Leven Hospital.

No patients were on board when the vehicle developed a mechanical fault on the A817 Haul Road at Garelochhead at around 5.30pm.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service attended the incident and put out the blaze. None of the personnel on board was injured.

A member of the public took photos which showed the flames engulfing the ambulance and then pictured the burned-out vehicle being loaded on to a recovery truck.

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesman said: "An ambulance returning to base at Vale of Leven developed a mechanical fault which resulted in a fire.

"No patients were involved and the crew were unharmed. The vehicle was replaced by a spare."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said that due to the presence of oxygen tanks on board the vehicle, the ambulance was left to cool down before being removed from the scene.

The road was closed to enable the fire service to tackle the blaze and temporary diversions were put in place.
