West Dunbartonshire Council will raise the Red Ensign flag this weekend to honour Merchant Navy personnel past and present.

The public are welcome to attend the ceremony for Merchant Navy Day this Saturday, September 3, at 11am at the Garshake Road council offices.

Provost Douglas McAllister will be joined by local politicians and council officers to raise the Red Ensign flag.

In its sixth year, Merchant Navy Day recognises the dedication of the UK’s serving merchant seafarers and remembers the sacrifice of those brave men and women who kept supply lines open during the First and Second World Wars.

Provost McAllister said: “It is an honour to mark Merchant Navy Day in this way and recognise the commitment and self-sacrifice of both our serving and former seafarers.

"The Merchant Navy has an important part to play in our history as a nation and continues to safely deliver vital supplies to our shores. I hope as many people as possible will join me in paying tribute to its personnel both past and present.”
