A PERSONAL trainer from Dumbarton will be taking on an incredible fitness challenge for Beatson Cancer Charity.

Sophie Davies PT will spend 10 hours on Saturday, December 10, doing continual exercise in order to raise money for the charity that helps cancer patients when they need them most.

Summing up her fantastic feat, Sophie told The Reporter: "I'll be doing the same one-hour routine 10 times back to back for 10 hours.

"There'll be everything from star jumps to crunches and my clients will be joining in to help me out. I'll have a different partner for each hour.

"It won't be a high intensity workout because I don't think anyone could really keep that up for 10 hours but it'll be challenging enough so my clients have also been collecting sponsors.

"Because it's outdoors it's a bit more difficult as well. Usually with these workouts you're used to the hall environment but we won't be sheltered from the elements with this.

"I'll only be taking one minute breaks on the half hour and hour as well."

The idea for the ten-hour challenge came to Sophie after a visit to the Beatson for an MRI scan when she had hurt her back. After meeting the people there and seeing how well looked after they were, she decided she wanted to do something to help.

She said: "When I went in there was a queue and I wasn't very fast on my feet at this point so a woman actually got up out of her seat, even though she was not well and connected to a drip, and she showed where the MRI bit was.

"She told me she probably wouldn't get home but it was OK because she liked the place and it was really nice.

"That just floored me, that they can make people so comfortable that they're happy even when dealing with such a terrible illness is amazing.

"After I got better I decided I would do something to help."

After looking online and reading about different sponsored challenges that people have done, Sophie decided she would do something a little different, and eventually settled on the ten-hour workout.

Though there were lots to do she felt given her job she should amp up the challenge, saying: "People do sponsored walks and things like that but I thought since I'm a personal trainer I should ramp it up a bit.

"My clients were a bit hesitant at first but once they found out who it was for they were all really keen. I think everyone has had a personal experience with Beatson that has went really well."
