ENCHANTING children’s author Angela Proctor had pupils spellbound during a visit to two Vale primary schools recently.

Angela, famous for writing tales of witchcraft and wizardry, read from her latest book Thumble Tumble and the Cauldron of Undry and talked to pupils about what it means to be a children’s author.

Angela told the Reporter: “The day was fantastic. We were at Bonhill first and they were amazing and St Mary’s were great too.“This was our second time at Bonhill and some of the kids had actually read my last book so when she was reading from the second one they really seemed to enjoy it. It was the first visit we’ve had to St Mary’s and the kids loved it, they were really engaged and had great imaginations to get involved with.”

Events started off with a reading and then moved on to Angela taking some questions from the children. There were also a few games that the pupils could get involved in and use to get their imaginations working.

Fiona Mitchell, Primary 6 teacher at Bonhill Primary, said: “The children were very engaged the whole time and there have been a few orders for the book since the reading.

“They were really quiet whilst Angela was reading, which is always a good sign that they’re engaging in it.

“I think they really liked that she was Scottish and the book was set in Scotland. The story came from her daughter as well and I think a few kids were going home to ask their parents to write stories about them!”

Charlie Kennedy, St Mary’s head teacher, added: “It was a very enjoyable day for the children. It was part of Book Week Scotland so we were really trying to get the children into reading.”

“They were all very enthusiastic and we feel it’s very important for the children to engage and so we try to get them involved whenever possible.”
