THE Reporter has scored a dramatic winner with a double-winning school football team who are aiming to be reunited after more than 50 years.

Last week we told you the story about the Haldane Primary School team who, in 1966, celebrated local league title success and victory in the Russell Cup.

We also told how plans were afoot to reunite that successful double-winning side and The Reporter had been signed up to try to help.

Now one of the team members George Embelton, who now lives in Lytham St Annes, Lancashire, has reported a tremendous response to the story as he attempts to find out where the remaining players in the team are.

He said: “Thanks to the Dumbarton Reporter I have had contact with most of the people involved in the picture.

“But I am struggling to get any information on Billy Baxter and Graham McIntyre.

“I have not spoken to John Mackay but I am assured by a few of the chaps that he is still in the area and that one of them will contact him.

“Billy Montague took ill a few weeks ago but his sister Carol has been in touch and she will keep him posted.”

George wants to hear from other remaining team members and sent out this appeal, saying: “Billy Baxter and his family lived on Cook Road, in Haldane, quite close to Haldane Primary School.

“I remember he had an older sister and younger sister.

“I think the older sister was called Janice, I also think that his father was William and called Willie and his mother I’m sure must have been called Williamina – because I think that she was also referred to as Billy!

“And I think that Graeme McIntyre lived in Mcfarlane Road in Haldane and has an older brother named Alan.

“He also had a huge Alsatian called Kim.

“I believe that Alan was a well known local chef.

“But if anyone can shed light on where Graham or Billy are now, I would be delighted.

“I also think that Peter McLaren had two daughters and John White one.

“It would also be great to hear from any of them.”

The legendary Haldane Primary School team and coaches from 1966 is as follows: Billy Montague, Lindsay Easton, Billy Cameron, Billy Baxter, Donald Hunter, Brian Robertson, Graham McIntyre, Finlay Smith, John White (janitor), Alan Robertson, John McKay, Jim Paton, George Embelton, Gordon Campbell and Peter McLaren who ran the team.

If you think you know any of the players, or you’re one of them, get in touch with Paul Behan at The Reporter on 0141 435 8841 and we’ll pass on your details to George.
