BONHILL’S Glen Stewart (right) withdrew from the Inter-counties cross country at Nottingham on Saturday through illness.
The Mizuno RC athlete has a heavy cold hopes to compete at the Scottish Championships in a fortnight as he continues his bid to fight his way into the UK’s long-course team for the World Cross Country championships; the official trial for this 12,000 metre event — to be held in Dublin — takes place next month.
Stewart is in excellent form and was the leading UK finisher in a worldclass field at Newcastle recently. He did not want his ailment interfering with his preparations for later in the year.
“I see no point in making a fool of myself. I could have struggled round and barely made the top 20 at Nottingham. “If I’m not in shape to make the top five, there’s no point. My main focus is the track this summer.”
