Within the Scottish Parliament I have the role of Armed Forces and Veterans Spokesperson.

This is a very relevant position for me, and one in which I take great pride in, and use my knowledge and experience from being with the Dumbarton Territorial Army.

West Dunbartonshire has a deep history relating to the forces both Army and Navy through shipbuilding in Dumbarton and Clydebank.

Many of you who travel by train will have noticed the Dumbarton Veteran’s Association based within Dumbarton Central.

They provide a wonderful history to the local ties the area has with the forces and do a wonderful job in supporting veterans throughout the area.

It is wonderful to see this within our community, allowing people to see the work that has been done and is continuing to be done, not only to keep us safe, but to provide relief in troubled times around the world.

I have liaised and worked with numerous veteran’s charities and support groups who provide a wonderful support network.

They have helped house veterans, furnish their homes or simply provide comfort and support to them.

There are many veterans within Dumbarton and surrounding areas who have found themselves isolated or in unfortunate circumstances, which is unacceptable. I’m available to contact at any time, should someone require help or know someone else.

One of the main difficulties is the transition between service and civilian life, a main issue being suitable work.

This is one aspect I have been looking at carefully within my role and teaming up with public services and businesses to see what can be done to help bridge this gap. I would welcome feedback from any veterans in the area.

I was thrilled to see two conservative candidates being elected to West Dunbartonshire Council at the recent election, I very much look forward to working with Sally Page and Brian Walker to hopefully to continue to grow and develop West Dunbartonshire positively for everyone going forward.
