Pupils from Dumbarton's St Patrick's Primary recently took top honours at a relay cross country event held in Balloch Park for schools from all across West Dunbartonshire.

In total, a record 674 participants were involved from 27 primaries and six secondaries, including Hermitage Academy in Helensburgh for the first time.

This year's event was also the first time that Primary 5 and S2 pupils were involved, with boys and girls teams across the various age groups.

The event involved three runners from each team completing laps of a cross-country track - 1.2km for primary and 1.4km for secondary - with the total time for the team taken when the last runner crossed the line.

In the primaries category, St Patrick's Primary took the top spot, with St Mary's Primary in Duntocher finishing second and Clydemuir Primary taking third; while Hermitage Academy took first place in the secondary category, with Dumbarton Academy in second and Clydebank High School.

The race's organisers thanked volunteers from the West Dunbartonshire Sports Youth Group, Active Schools, Jog Scotland and from within the Council's Sports Development team, and also the local public, who generated an "awesome" atmosphere for the event.

Angus MacDonald, sports development officer, said: “With 203 additional runners taking part this year, I really need to thank the teachers and pupils who supported the relay event and for making it so popular. Many thanks also to the WDL staff and Red Cross volunteers who ensured that the event ran smoothly and safely.

"The runners that took part have shown great talent and I hope they keep active by either joining one of our Run Jump & Throw sessions or even joining an athletics club.

"The next cross country is the individual race in October which last year had over 848 pupils taking part and I hope to build on this again this year.”
