A DUMBARTON teenager has been representing Scotland as the convener of a committee set up to debate the issue of body image.

Alex Robertson, 18, is heading up the committee of eleven members of the UK Youth Parliament in discussing body image and its impact on the wellbeing of children and young people – an issue selected by the committee after more than one million people selected it as one of the top ten issues in the Youth Parliament’s Make Your Mark ballot in 2016.

She was elected as the representative for West Dunbartonshire on the Scottish Youth Parliament in 2015, focusing on issues surrounding mental health, and was elected as the convener of the Scottish Youth Parliament’s health and wellbeing committee.

In 2016, the former Dumbarton Academy pupil was then elected to the UK Youth Parliament, and spoke in the House of Commons as part of a Youth Parliament sitting.

She now leads the UKYP’s Youth Select Committee as the sole Scottish representative, with the committee helping to write a report on the issue of body image, which will then be sent to the government for comment.

The committee sits on Fridays, with the last hearing taking place on July 14, with submissions heard from teachers, mental health professionals, young people and government officials.
