A FEMALE motorcycle passenger was detained in hospital following an accident on the A82 on Sunday night.

The southbound A82 was log jammed at the Bowling roundabout following reports of a road traffic accident- with traffic moving very slowly towards Glasgow.

It's understood that the incident, at around 5.30pm, caused delays of more than an hour to motorists' journeys.

The traffic jam produced delays stretching back from the Bowling roundabout to- for a period- Dumbarton police station.

Inspector John Mullen of Dumbarton police said: "The 60 year-old passenger on the motorbike sustained an injury which required her to be detained in hospital overnight.

"The road was reopened after about one hour."

Current maintenance work on the Erskine Bridge is also thought to have exacerbated the problem.

Work to protect the long-term integrity of the supporting cables on the bridge started in August and is in operation at weekends- apart from the weekend of September 30 and Sunday, October 1.

As a result lane closures have been imposed during the period of the works, leading to delays for traffic heading in either direction.
