RESIDENTS of Dumbarton and the Vale have been urged to take precautions as ex-hurricane Ophelia is set to hit the area with destructive winds of up to 80mph.

West Dunbartonshire Council has warned that the storm may affect road, rail, air and ferry journeys with longer times and cancellations highly possible.

It is advised that all journeys are planned in advance.

The council has also urged residents to be aware that power cuts may occur and mobile phone services may also be affected.

The MET Office has released an Amber warning urging people to "be prepared" particularly in the south west of Scotland including the Strathclyde area.

The amber weather warning will be in place until 3pm on Tuesday.

The tropical storm has been working its way across the Atlantic with three people having been killed in Ireland today as a result of the storm.

Thousands of homes have been left without power and schools in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland have been shut.
