WEST Dunbartonshire Council commemorated 100 years since women gained the right to vote in the UK by lighting the Titan Crane in the Women’s Suffrage colours.
The landmark shone purple, white and green from dusk on February 6 until dawn the following day.
The colours represent purple for dignity, white for purity, and green for hope.
After many years of struggle led by ‘suffragists’ and the ‘suffragettes’ on February 6, 1918, the Representation of the People Act passed, allowing women over 30 with certain property qualifications to vote.
Finally in 1928, the government passed the Representation of the People (Equal Franchise) Act giving the vote to all women over the age of 21 on equal terms with men.
