HOMELESSNESS in West Dunbartonshire has fallen in the last year, according to figures revealed at a housing and communities meeting.
The number of incidences of homelessness recorded in 2017/18 was 1,048 – a reduction of 87 from the previous year.
Incidences of youth homelessness have dropped from 360 to 290 – a fall of almost 20 per cent.
The ‘More than a Roof’ strategy has met its other three targets, ensuring offers of temporary accommodation are made to those in need; homeless cases are dealt with within 28 days; and tenants are satisfied with the quality of their residence.
Some of the achievements cited in a report were the introduction of a youth housing options service in October of last year.
The service, based in Clydebank, is dedicated to helping people aged 16-21 identify and realise their “full potential and plan for a successful housing future”.
The first year of the project is estimated to save the council £180,000 through a reduction in youth homelessness.
The Ashton View supported accommodation project in Dumbarton has been extended from 14 to 22 beds as it looks to deliver “successful and sustainable outcomes”.
John Kerr, housing development and homelessness manager, recognised the issue of homelessness is “very much a national priority going forward” and would continue to be locally.
