Health warnings have been issued to the public with warm temperatures to continue and the sun set to at the end of May.

Optical Express experts say millions across the country risk permanent damage to their eyesight by wearing “fast fashion” sunglasses that offer little or no ultraviolet (UV) protection.

According to Optical Express, almost half of Brits say they choose fashion frames when shopping for new sunglasses, while just 20 per cent admit to looking out for the CE mark, which shows glasses have been made to appropriate standards.

Stephen Hannan, clinical services director at Optical Express, said: “Sunglasses may be a great fashion accessory to team with your favourite outfit, but being sun-wise can help to avoid a variety of eye health problems.”

Their tips for top eye protection are to choose sunglasses with UV 400 protection; check for a CE Mark; protect children’s eyes as their eyes are more likely to be irreversibly damaged by sun; and check to ensure frames fit your face well enough so that light cannot easily enter your eyes form the sides or above.
