The question of whether the announcement of the new Earl and Countess of Dumbarton will bring in tourism to the town appears to have been answered, in part, after the Reporter met two tourists who stopped by to check out the place behind the royal couple’s new titles.

Michelle and Graham Black, from Adelaide, Australia, have been enjoying a six-week trip of the UK.

Travelling down from Inverness and Edinburgh, the intrigued couple dropped into Dumbarton en-route to Glasgow.

Taking in the sights at Dumbarton Castle, the couple said they thought the town was “nice”, and were impressed by its heritage.

“We thought we would stop by and have a look around and get a photo,” said Graham, 50.

“We hadn’t heard of Dumbarton, so we wouldn’t have come if it wasn’t for Harry and Meghan.”

And Michelle explained that Dumbarton is now well and truly on the world’s lips, with friends and family back home keen to hear about their trip.

Michelle said: “Their new titles brought us here, if that means anything. I’m going to put the pictures on social media to say I’ve been. It’s nice here.”
