A Balloch boxer on a mission to go pro is appealing to local businesses to help him achieve his dream.

Xander Savage, 20, currently travels to Glasgow four times a week to train as he gathers his experience to make his move into professional boxing.

He is currently sponsored by Niall Anderson of The Power Food Company, who supplies him with health foods.

But as he prepares for a title fight this weekend down in Tynemouth, Xander says any further support from local businesses would be greatly appreciated.

And as he progresses and his profile grows, he says in return he can help spread the news of Vale businesses further.

“I’ve wanted this for so long. There’s nothing else in the world I want to do,” said Xander.

“I’m not just a big dream guy."

The sportsman is always accompanied to training by his partner and toddler daughter, with the family dedicated to helping him get to the top.

Xander said: “She [my daughter] has been coming to the gym with me from being three days old.

“It’s a constant reminder of what I’m doing this for.

“I do want the big challenges and to be tested to the best of my abilities, but I just want to be the best ‘me’ that I can get to and help everybody around me. They have been there since day dot.”

And his coaches, Paul Fellows Junior and Paul Fellows Senior, who have worked with Xander for the last three years, believe he has what it takes to go far.

Mr Fellows Senior said: “It’s his determination and hard work. That’s what it takes. You have lots of people who have the talent, but you need that right mental attitude.”

And Mr Fellows Junior added: “He just works so hard. He’s just 20 years old now, and we’ve seen him coming on from a boy to man. Every single day he’s out on a run, doing press ups. Always going that extra mile."

And as he faces Josh Johnstone in a welterweight title fight at the Park Hotel, Tynemouth, this Saturday, Xander believes he’s got the edge of strength to clinch the win.
