The head teacher of Bonhill Primary School has resigned, the Reporter understands.

An online petition in support of teacher Maria Seery has been launched with more than 230 signatures of support.

The petition claims the teacher stepped down “after an online hate campaign”.

Councillor Jim Bollan told the Reporter he was “very disappointed and concerned to learn on social media that the head teacher of Bonhill Primary has felt it necessary to submit her resignation”.

The Leven councillor added: “I know Ms Seery is a well-respected head and has put her heart and soul into developing the school.

“The number of parents shocked and dismayed at her resignation is testament to how she is viewed locally by parents. I hope she reconsiders her position.”

When the Reporter approached the council on the matter, a spokesperson explained the council “does not comment on individual employees”.

The news of Maria Seery’s reported resignation comes amidst reports of a row between parents and the school, after disabled parking bays in the school car park were allegedly blocked off.

Furious parents with disabled children attending Bonhill Primary, claimed to the Reporter the school gates have been shut to them and cones put across the disabled parking bays in recent weeks.

They also allege they have seen members of staff without blue badges parking in bays. They have dubbed the situation “a nightmare” and have concerns for their children’s safety if they have no access to the parking spots.

Dumbarton police confirmed community officers were asked to attend the school last week and had “spoken with persons involved.”

“There is no enquiry ongoing, it is a matter for WDC education, school management and parents/carers to resolve amicably.”

A spokesperson from the council told the Reporter: “We are aware of these concerns and are investigating.

“The two marked spaces within the staff car park at Bonhill Primary are advisory and for the benefit of staff and visitors to the school who would be eligible to use disabled parking bays.

“We are committed to ensuring access to all of our buildings and where possible will make reasonable adjustments to support this.”
