Police in Dumbarton are appealing for witnesses and warning the public to be on their guard following a bogus caller incident in the town.

According to cops, an 81-year-old woman at home in West Bridgend at around 1.30pm on July 12 answered the door to a man claiming to be from a water company who asked to carry out some checks in her home.

She allowed the man entry to her home – and he allegedly left a short time later with a three-figure sum of cash.

The suspect is described as white, around 5ft 7in tall, of stocky build, with light brown receding hair. He was wearing a yellow high-vis jacket, a dark long sleeve T-shirt and dark trousers.

Chief Inspector Scott Cairns said: "I want to reassure people that we are doing everything we can to trace the person responsible.

“If you have had someone at your door recently that you were unsure of, or if an elderly relative has informed you of an incident, we would like to hear from you.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at Dumbarton on 101, quoting incident number 2072 of July 12.
