A monthly live music event in Dumbarton, which raises money for local charities and causes, is donating towards the installation of a defibrillator.

The Dumbarton Acoustic Music Night, which is organised by the owner of local record store Discography Music, Alistair Ferguson, has pledged money for the life-saving piece of medical equipment after the idea was sparked in a conversation with the owners of The Big Sparra Music Cafe on Dumbarton's Glasgow Road.

The music night, which takes place on second Friday of each month at St Augustine's Church, brings together talented musicians of all stripes for a night of performances, with money being collected at each event.

Alistair, whose shop is situated in the Bell Centre, told the Reporter: "I realised that there was no facility for anyone, particularly young people, to perform an acoustic instrument.

"I've been running these nights for 6 years now and have raised over £12,000 for various local charities and causes. "Most notable was when we raised £800 for The Clutha Bar tragedy in January 2014, and others that have benefitted over the years are visually impaired group The VIPERS, Lennox Children's Trust, Alzheimer Scotland, Vale Of Leven Asperger's & Autism Group, St Augustine's Church, and the Food For Thought group."

The money raised so far this summer will now go towards a planned defibrillator which will be fitted locally.

Alistair added: "I've pledged a sum of money to the cause and we hope to add extra funds on the night.

"Hopefully we can raise enough to at least get the project well on it's way."

The nights usually feature six acts performing for around 20 or 30 minutes each.

Local folk and pop trio AGM host the night and are joined on the bill by guitar soloist Ken Turner, female pop duo Salud, and others.

Alistair said: "What's very noticeable about these nights, is that St Augustine's Church is a perfect theatre for acoustic music - it has a very calming atmosphere.

"We have a steady following who attend most months, and what is very evident is that everyone who comes along really listens to who performs.

"It's not an open mic night, it attracts performers of varying ability, and each artist is give an allotted time to play.

"Anyone wishing to come along and listen, can bring a drink and some food, relax, and enjoy a variety of excellent music."
