A woman at a West Dunbartonshire care home has celebrated her 100th birthday surrounded by family and friends.

Lambhill-born Janet Bain marked her centenary at Crosslet House Care Home in Dumbarton, where she is a resident.

Staff at the home put on a small birthday bash, attended by friends and family, as well as West Dunbartonshire Council Provost William Hendrie, who presented her with flowers and a congratulatory card from the council.

He was joined by the area's Deputy Lieutenant Lumsden Mathieson, who was on hand to present Janet with the customary 100th birthday card from the Queen.

Janet's daughters, Margaret and Janet, who now lives in the US and travelled over for the occasion, also came along to the party.

Margaret, 76, told the Reporter: "It all went very well and was a great day for everyone.

"It was wonderful to see the Lord Provost personally congratulate my mum, and it meant she really enjoyed the day.

"It was a thoroughly amazing celebration."

Margaret was accompanied by her son Barry and his wife Elaine.

Janet has lived a long and fruitful life upon reaching her 100th year.

After leaving school in Lambhill she went on to work in various retail positions before becoming manager at Duntocher service station.

She lived much of her life in Knightswood, where she moved with her children and husband William.

There she was a particularly active member of St David's Church, acting as president of the church guild and taking on the responsibility of managing the accounts.

She also worked with the Royal Voluntary Service at Gartnavel Hospital, as manageress of the charity's store.

Later in her life, she moved to live with her son Barry's family in Dumbarton, continuing her much loved hobbies of reading and knitting.

Now resident at the care home, it fell upon the on duty staff to ensure that her landmark birthday was given the proper celebrations.

Linda Liddell, one of the staff members at Crosslet House, said: "Janet was joined by so many people to congratulate her on such a big day, including her fellow residents and other friends.

"Everyone had a smashing day."
