A MAN who drove at “outrageous” speeds through the streets of Alexandria without insurance has been banned from the roads for 30 months.

Yadhvinder Sarao, 24, was told by Sheriff William Gallacher when he appeared at Dumbarton Sheriff Court on Wednesday last week that he had evaded a custodial sentence “by the closest of calls”.

Sarao, from Haberlea Gardens, Glasgow, had failed to stop when required to do so by two police constables on the A82 between Dumbarton and Balloch and elsewhere in Alexandria on January 31, 2017.

He drove dangerously and at excessive speeds around Alexandria roads, failing to give way at junctions. He committed the offences while on bail.

Sarao’s defence lawyer claimed that his client had been “extremely shaken” by his last appearance at court and pleaded with the judge to spare him jail, claiming “it doesn’t always work”.

Sheriff Gallacher condemned the speeds at which Sarao had driven as “outrageous” and the potential danger to other people

“you didn’t care about”.

He added: “The police had to back off because they thought the risk was so great for them.”

Sarao was sentenced to a 12-month community payback order, 275 hours of unpaid work and a driving ban lasting 30 months.

Sheriff Gallagher also imposed a curfew from 7pm to 7am lasting for four months.
