A DUMBARTON man lashed out at his partner after they rowed over a boxing match they’d watched on television the previous night.

Damian Callaghan, 25, grabbed the woman and threw her to the ground in the attack at a flat in the town’s Steven Street last summer.

Callaghan, of Eastfield Crescent, appeared at the town’s sheriff court for sentencing on Friday on charges of assault and threatening or abusive behaviour.

He also admitted breaching a bail condition imposed in connection with the August incident when he was seen in the common close outside his victim’s home on May 11.

Fiscal depute Michelle Brannagan told Friday’s hearing: “The accused and the complainer had been at the locus in the company of other friends watching a boxing match on TV on the night of August 26.

“At about 7.30am the next day an argument began between them over the outcome of that match.

“The argument moved into the kitchen. The complainer’s friend entered the kitchen and saw the accused throw the complainer to the ground.

“The accused shouted and swore, calling the complainer a ‘cow’ and a ‘boot’, and making threats about killing her father.”

Police were contacted, and though Callaghan had left by the time officers arrived, he was traced four days later.

He appeared in court on September 1 and was released on bail on condition that he should not approach, communicate with or attempt to approach or communicate with the victim of the attack.

But Ms Brannagan said that on the afternoon of May 11, police officers who were at the woman’s home to speak to her about last August’s incident spotted Callaghan entering the common close at the property.

She added:“Police chased him and he was found hiding in a bin shed.”

Lauren Kerr, defending, said:"He recognises he was completely out of line, and he appreciates the serious nature of these matters."

Sheriff John Hamilton handed Callaghan a community payback order which requires him to carry out 240 hours of unpaid work within 12 months. He was placed under social work supervision for the same length of time.
