RESIDENTS in Renton will soon have a brand-new community garden with various activities delivered on site thanks to receiving a big cash fund.

Cordale Housing Association secured £90,000 from the Big Lottery Fund and said they have a very clear vision of how the money will be used.

Plans to create a new community garden hub are in place that will involve 30 volunteers and 250 individuals across Renton.

In addition to the build and landscaping element of the community garden hub, structured activities will also be delivered including gardening and horticultural courses, healthy cooking and eating sessions using fruit and vegetables produced from the garden and nature walks.

It will also be used by residents as an informal outdoor space and a community outdoor venue.

Kevin Nixon, Cordale’s area housing manager, said: “On my first day in Renton walking around the area with the local committee, a member pointed the land out to me and said, ‘We want to make that a community garden if we can’ and after much hard work, we now have the funds and the planning permission to make it a reality.

“I think Cordale continues to punch well above its weight, so well done to the team there.”

Through previous funding from the Big Lottery, a community garden project steering group, made up of residents and volunteers, and supported by Cordale Housing Association, developed detailed plans to regenerate a vacant plot of land between land between 14 and 15 Glen View, Renton.

And now, a new community garden coordinator will support the steering group to drive the project forward, whilst instilling wider community participation and ownership of the project.
