A WEST Dunbartonshire councillor nominated for an awards scheme has withdrawn his name, stating he does not believe in any type of honours system.

Leven Councillor Jim Bollan was up for the urban community champion category in an initiative by LGiU Scotland aiming to recognise elected officials who go the extra mile for their constituents.

The Community Party councillor told the Reporter: “Whilst I am delighted someone nominated me for this award as a councillor, I have withdrawn my name from the shortlisted candidates.

“As a socialist I have never believed in any type of honours system as they can be used by the establishment to divide the working class.”

This is the inaugural year of the LGiU’s Councillor Achievement Awards in Scotland.

There are eight award categories celebrating the varied work of councillors.

Anyone could nominate a serving councillor: members of the public, councillors and council officers – the only rule was that no one could nominate themselves.

Fellow Leven Councillor Caroline McAllister is on the judging panel.

Nominations closed September 20 and The awards will be presented on November 29 November at a ceremony held at Edinburgh’s City Chambers.
