The head teacher of Dumbarton Academy has hailed the success of a pupil-led initiative aimed at getting young people moving.

Two hundred pupils from S1 to S6 showed off their dance moves as they took part in an Active Girls Day at the school recently.

The event was organised by the Young Ambassadors, Sports Council and PE department within the school to celebrate the Sportscotland initiative of the same name, as well as Women in Sport Week.

The event encouraged participants to get as active as possible and do at least one hour of activity before 11am.

The pupils taking part did so by dancing to routines from the game Just Dance along with the support of the senior girls who led the others through their steps.

Headteacher Claire McInally told the Reporter: “It was great to see the success of Active Girls Day.

“It was just one of a series of pupil-led initiatives aiming to ensure our young people are fully aware of the positive effects of activity on a person’s physical and mental health.

“The event was vibrant and fun and I know that our pupils – who were not just girls – thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

“It created a fantastic atmosphere around the school and has encouraged more pupils to become involved in PE and extra-curricular clubs.”

Active Girls Day encouraged schools and hubs across Scotland to take part in the initiative as a way of celebrating the amazing work going into girls’ sport, the progress around girls’ participation and the incredible role models making it happen.

As our pictures show, the event was thoroughly enjoyed by all and had everyone on their feet doing their best moves.
