The Skylark IX Recovery Trust have marked the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Armistice with a “stunning” remembrance concert.

Indian dancers, West African drummers, the brass band from Our Lady and St Patrick’s High School, the Lennox Primary choir, the Christie Park Primary choir, the Clydebank Male Voice Choir and the Phoenix Youth Theatre were among those who performed in the show at the Denny Civic Theatre.

Duncan McCrone, who wrote the Skylark song, performed live in Dumbarton for the first time, while singer-songwriter Alan Brydon sang self-penned On the Road to Passchendaele in a spine-tingling finale.

A lone piper Kevin McLean played a rousing rendition of the music at the end of Alan’s song to cap a wonderful afternoon, before schoolchildren sang Abide with Me with the audience of around 270.

Mary Burch, secretary of the Trust, told the Reporter: “We wanted the concert to be memorable and we succeeded.

“Alan finished the show for us and performed three songs. The audience were awestruck by the finale, it was a wonderful end.

“The pupils from Lennox Primary sang Tipperary, which was another lovely moment.

“We were blown away by the OLSP brass band. The audience was stunned into silence by the wonderful music and we would love to have them back.”

The show was attended by 11 Erskine veterans as guests of honour as well as council and community representatives.

Organisers had invited children to submit art entries, design the cover for the concert programme and write a poem about the First World War or the centenary.

The winner of the poetry competition was Jack Masson, a P7 pupil from Christie Park Primary, who read aloud his poem entitled Bang Bang Bang, which was also printed in the programme.

Arryn Embelton from Christie Park was named winner of the concert programme design competition, while fellow Christie Park pupil Freya Kelly’s illustration was used on the back cover of the programme.

Evan Gallacher from Lennox Primary was named the winner of the WW1 art competition.

Artwork by other pupils from Lennox Primary was framed and put on display in the theatre foyer.

The trust’s AGM is on November 21 at 4pm at the Veterans Hall in Alexandria, where some of the poems will be read and drawings will be on display. A teacher from Clydebank who has visited war graves with pupils has been invited to give a presentation. Anyone is welcome to attend.
