A DUMBARTON thug who bottled a man over the head during a New Year’s party “which went wrong” has been jailed.

William McKenzie, 27, of Whiteford Avenue, committed the offences on January 1, 2018, at a house in Main Street, Renton.

He assaulted a man by striking him on the head with a bottle and kicking him on the body.

McKenzie pleaded guilty to the offence when he appeared at Dumbarton Sheriff Court last month.

Prosecutor Kevin Doherty said previously: “It was a New Year celebration which went wrong.

“At 7am he was at Main Street in Renton with a number of other people.

“Drink had been taken, and [those present] had been up all night drinking.

“Certain individuals had been asked to leave and a general argument started.

“A joke was made which McKenzie did not take well, and he removed a bottle from a bag and struck a man over the head once with it.

“He then began kicking him on the body.

“A female was screaming for him to stop. He backed away and ran back into the house.

“A man who was struck was bleeding from the head, and was taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley.

“[The victim] had suffered a two and a half centimetre cut which required three stitches.

“Police made inquiries and McKenzie was traced and interviewed.

“He denied the assault but admitted a discord had taken place.”

McKenzie returned to Dumbarton Sheriff Court last week to be sentenced.

Sheriff Simon Pender, after having considered a full social background report, sentenced McKenzie to 13 months for the assault and also returned him to prison for 14 days on another offence.

The sheriff ordered the sentences to run consecutively.
