PLANS for redeveloping the centre of Alexandria will proceed with supermarket Lidl taking the lead, councillors have heard.

Prime developer CCG Ltd has withdrawn, heard West Dunbartonshire Council's infrastructure, regeneration and economic development (IRED) committee last week.

But Lidl and Kingsmead Developments had raise they want to continue on. Council bosses are continuing to work with both firms and lawyers to ensure the regeneration goes ahead.

Jim McAloon, head of regeneration and economic development, said there had been "very positive meetings".

Councillor Martin Rooney pointed out the original completion date for the Mitchell Way project was supposed to be 2009 and said it remained "vital" to the area.

Council leader Jonathan McColl agreed with other members that the progress was frustrating, adding: "If we can move forward with this, it's a really positive step."

The update was part of a report listing disposals of property and assets across West Dunbartonshire.

Councillors agreed Mitchell Way could proceed with Lidl and Kingsmead on their own and finalise the transaction.
