The police investigation into last December’s fatal fire at Cameron House hotel is still ongoing as the first anniversary of the tragedy approaches.

Londoners Simon Midgley, 32, and Richard Dyson, 38, who were on a pre-Christmas holiday at the five-star resort, died in the fire.

The blaze sent shockwaves around the lochside communities as the extent of the fire, on the morning of December 18, 2017, became apparent.

Families of the two men and management and staff at the iconic hotel received many messages of sympathy from locals and from people around the world who had stayed there.

The Crown Office Procurator and Fiscal Service (COPFS) received death reports following the incident and an investigation report from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service earlier in the year. These are not prosecution reports.

However, the investigation by Police Scotland and other agencies continues, and COPFS has not yet received final reports from them.

A Crown Office spokesman told the Reporter: “The procurator fiscal has received reports in connection with the deaths of Simon Midgley and Richard Dyson at the Cameron House Hotel, Loch Lomond, on December 18, 2017.

“The investigation into the death by Police Scotland, under the direction of the Scottish Fatalities Investigation Unit (SFIU), is ongoing and the families will continue to be kept updated in relation to any significant developments.”

SFIU is the specialist unit within COPFS responsible for investigating all sudden, suspicious, accidental and unexplained deaths.

Where a death is reported, the Procurator Fiscal will investigate the circumstances of the death, attempt to ascertain the cause of death and consider whether criminal proceedings or a Fatal Accident Inquiry (FAI) is appropriate.

The main building at the hotel, including the Leisure Club, and Great Scots Bar is to reopen next autumn.
