The Scottish SPCA are urging people in Dumbarton to carefully consider the commitment needed before buying pets for a present at Christmas.

Whilst the charity’s rehoming centres are open for the public to visit throughout the festive season, they stop rehoming puppies, kittens and other animals every year between December 19 and January 3 to avoid people giving the pets as gifts.

Judy Button, manager of the Dumbarton rehoming centre, said: "People have to give serious consideration to the commitment they are making when they buy a pet.

"Sadly, we are all too familiar with being asked to take in puppies, kittens and other pets given as gifts when the novelty has worn off.”

“Animals are abandoned and as well as being extremely cruel this is a criminal offence.”
