During a historic week for tennis - when former world number one champion Andy Murray shocked fans by announcing his plans to retire - the next generation of potential tennis stars from Dumbarton based Kirktonhill Tennis Club had fun practising their shot at an indoor session in Meadow Leisure Centre, Dumbarton.

Messages of support have flooded in for the injury-plagued former Wimbledon champion after he burst into tears at a press conference in Australia on Friday, when he revealed that the end of his career was imminent.

He's faced a tough 20-month battle after hip surgery, which he's been unable to make a full recovery from.

Treasurer of Kirktonhill Tennis Club, Karen Haggarty, said: "When the weather's so unpredictable in January and February we like to kick start the new year with indoor tennis to keep up the children's interest.

"We were all very sad to hear about Andy's plans to retire because he's been an absolute inspiration to the youngsters at the club over the years.

"I'm very disappointed for him and for Scottish tennis that it's come to this, but he's in a lot of pain so it's understandable and he's achieved a lot.

"The coach often talks to the children about what Andy's achieved.

"He tells them that he's only done so well by working hard and putting in a lot of effort - that's the only way to achieve.

"Andy's had such a huge following and been a huge influence in the tennis world - we're all sad to see him hang up his racquet."
