Motorists face weeks of travel disruption in Dumbarton town centre while work is carried out around Central Station.

Church Street and College Street underneath the Dumbarton Central railway bridges are closed while Network Rail spends £1.3million on a refurbishment project.

Motorists will be diverted along Bonhill Road until the 10-week project is finished.

It will see Network Rail repair metalwork and repaint the bridges on Church Street and College Street.

A spokesman for Network Rail said the works will be carried out without disruption to any train services.

He said: “Network Rail is carrying out a £1.3m project to refurbish two railway bridges at Dumbarton Central.

“This will include repairs to the metalwork and repainting of the bridges – on Church Street and College Street.

“The bridges have been encased in a scaffold, then we’ll blast off the old paint, assess the metal, carry-out any required repairs and then repaint the structures.

“The works will be done without disrupting any services.

“The work on College Street will finish mid-February and Church Street in late-March.”

The refurbishment follows a £2m investment in October last year to renew the bridge over Bonhill Road and the £1.2m refurbishment of the rail viaduct across the Leven in 2017.

The spokesman added: “The work we are undertaking is vital to the long-term operation of the railway. We understand the inconvenience the work will cause to some motorists and are committed to completing the project as quickly as possible.

“This is the most effective and quickest way to deliver the project, and we are working hard to try to limit the impact of our works on road users and nearby residents.”
