A CERVICAL cancer survivor and activist is appealing for people to take part in a campaign that could save lives.

Suzanne Fernando wants people to join in on a #SmearforSmear campaign, to ensure every woman understands the importance of screening in preventing cervical cancer.

She was diagnosed with the disease when she was pregnant - and almost died before getting to hold her baby girl.

Smear tests prevent 75 per cent of cervical cancers, so while they may not be pleasant, they are important.

Suzanne said: "To get involved post a #SmearForSmear selfie with a tip or word of support. Your post might be the reminder or encouragement someone needs to book their test, it could literally save their life.

“With over 1.2 million people not taking up their invite each year it’s more important than ever. Smear tests aren’t easy for everyone, but they can save lives.

“The number of people going for smear tests is lower than ever. One in four women still don't attend their smear test. I want everyone to know what a smear test is for, why they’re important and ways to make them better."

Suzanne raises awareness, fundraises, presents at various clubs and organisations and has her own online cervical cancer support page with more than 37,000 members.

She added: "You can call me a cancer survivor, but I'd rather be known as a cancer 'thriver'. These days I love nothing more than helping others who are dealing with the disease to thrive as well.

“With the help of my wonderful family I took good care of myself with diet, exercise and positive thinking to get myself through it and I am happy to say that this year marks my 18th year as a cancer thriver.”
