Two groups in the area are celebrating after receiving tens of thousands of pounds to develop the skills and talents of their members.

The West Dunbartonshire Gymnastics Club (WDGC) and Dunbartonshire Disability Sports Club (DDSC) are among 28 youth- led groups in Scotland receiving a cash boost from the National Lottery’s Young Start programme.

WDGC, which is based at the West Dumbarton Activity Club in Dumbarton has received £58,688, while DDSC which meets at St Peter the Apostle High School in Clydebank, has received £35,255.

The gymnastics club will use the money to widen access to gymnastics, specifically to children and young people living in areas adjacent to the gymnastics facility, and to children and young people with disabilities.

In addition, the project will also develop and formalise its volunteering opportunities and pathways to coaching for young people within the gymnastics club.

On their Facebook page, the club said: “We are delighted to finally announce we have successfully secured funding from The National Lottery Community Fund Scotland.

“The funding will be spread across three years and will be for the following projects: the volunteer programme, scholarship programme and disability gymnastics programme.

“We hope that the success of these projects will help many young people in West Dunbartonshire get involved in gymnastics.”

DDSC, meanwhile, will use their cash boost to recruit and work with young people age 14 to 21 with additional support needs to provide access to sports activities coaching, and development opportunities to become skilled leaders, volunteers and sports coaches.

The three year project will work with 20 young people from across West Dunbartonshire.
