GARDENERS in Helensburgh and the surrounding area wasted no time in snapping up lots of potential new additions to their blooming great displays on Saturday morning.
The doors to the Helensburgh and Gareloch Horticultural Society’s annual plant sale were due to open at the Victoria Halls at half past nine – but when the Advertiser’s photographer arrived with the clock still approaching 20 minutes past, the main hall was already abuzz with customers.
Bedding plants, vegetable plants, shrubs, house plants and lots more were on sale, as well as the opportunity to buy seeds and cuttings to cultivate new garden additions from scratch.

So popular was the event that there was even a ‘plant creche’ in one corner of the hall, set up to allow enthusiastic buyers to leave the first of their purchases in the care of volunteers Sandra Hamilton and Esther Ellis, so they could go off and snap up some more!
The hugely successful plant sale was set up by the society many years ago as a fund-raiser to support the staging of its main event, the annual flower and vegetable show, held at the Victoria Halls every August.
