HELENSBURGH tennis hero Gordon Reid played a key role as Great Britain's men's wheelchair tennis team secured the BNP Paribas World Team Cup in Israel.
Reid produced a fine display in the final against France to beat Nicolas Peifer 6-1, 7-6 (3), while team-mate Alfie Hewett saw off world number three Stephane Houdet 6-0, 7-5, as GB secured the prize for the first time since 2015 at Ramat Hasharon in Tel Aviv.
The success of the British men’s team – comprising Hewett, Reid and Dermot Bailey – ended a triumphant week for British wheelchair tennis, following a silver for the junior team and a bronze for the women’s team on Friday.
Together with the quad team’s fourth place finish, the results made it Britain’s best ever performance at a World Team Cup in the event’s 35-year history – in fact, GB were the only nation to have teams reach the semi-final stage in all four World Team Cup events.
Reid, currently number eight in the men’s world rankings, said afterwards: “It’s been a long time since the last one and we’ve come close a couple of times since, so it’s amazing to get over the line today – and to do it in convincing style, too."
