RYAN JONES headed a dramatic injury-time winner to keep Helensburgh’s promotion push on course in their last home match of the season against Jordanhill.

Burgh knew a win was vital against the last team to have defeated them in the league, way back in November, and Jones’ winner made it a incredible 13 league victories on the bounce for Sam Gemmell’s troops as they aim to win a place in the Greater Glasgow Premier AFL’s top flight.

Once again the line up was different from the previous game with Callum O’Brien and Marc McNeil back in the starting eleven.

From the off the visitors decided they would sit in and leave some pace upfront to trouble the home defence – and it was a tactic that worked early on as Helensburgh struggled to break down a well-disciplined defensive line.

The closest Burgh came was when a deflected header came back off the post; at the other end Jordanhill didn’t really trouble O’Brien, but the biggest blow to Helensburgh was the loss of Steven Baillie in defence to what looked like a hamstring injury.

Burgh upped the pace after the break, and David Allan thought he’d opened the scoring, only to see his shot cannon off the post

But David Sinclair finally eased Helensburgh’s nerves when he found the net after his first effort from close range was parried by the Jordanhill keeper.

Helensburgh pressed on, and in the best passage of play all night, Keith Thomas struck the crossbar from a Karl Johansson cutback.

But ankle injuries to both McNeil and the influential Del Park in defence forced Burgh into some positional changes, and Jordanhill took advantage of the hosts’ unsettled back line when they took advantage of some loose play to leve.

That was a huge blow for the home side, and with less than ten minutes left Jones was pushed up from his defensive duties to create a three-pronged attack.

Johansson thought he’d won it with a free kick awarded after Jones was brought down, only to see his shot whistle past the post.

And with the ref looking at his watch, another Johansson free kick was saved, and Russell Makeham followed up with the rebound, only for the Jordanhill keeper to recover superbly and turn the ball round the post for a corner.

And from Makeham’s kick, Jones headed home at the near post to spark wild celebrations among the home players and fans.
