A MULTI-MILLION pound appeal has been launched to return a steamer to its former glory.

The group behind the restoration of the paddle steamer Waverley is looking to raise a £2.3 million, in the hopes of returning the boat to service by next year.

This year’s season was cancelled last month, following the discovery of “major problems” in the boilers of the ship, which were installed just two decades ago.

Following the revelation of the problems, supporters flocked to the operators, donating more than £100,000 in the hopes repairing the damage.

The Waverley Facebook page was also inundated with more than on million hits.

Paul Semple, who heads up the group behind the boat, said: “We’re heartened by the support so far — it’s clear that huge numbers of people around Britain and around the world want to see Waverley sail again.

“But the financial challenge which faces Waverley remains very significant, and we urgently need more funds to let us place the orders and then carry out the work over the next nine months.”

Work needed on the boat has been described as similar to “open heart surgery”, with the iconic funnels removed, along with sections of the decking, to a allow new boilers to be fitted.

If successful, the repairs are expected to extend the life of the Waverley by another 20 to 25 years.

After rigorous research, which produced a costed plan for the best way to return the boat to service, all that remains is to garner the money required.

Mr Semple said: “There’s a real determination not to allow Waverley to become a static relic. She was built to sail, and that’s what so many people want to see again.

“Waverley’s truly unique status as the world’s last seagoing paddle steamer mustn’t be taken for granted.

“Not for the first time, the future of the ship hangs in the balance. Once again, it’s time to save the Waverley.”
