Pupils in West Dunbartonshire are showing year-on-year improvement in education levels, according to a report presented to the Educational Services Committee.

The report shows that pupils in primaries one and four have been meeting and exceeding the national average in all areas. While primary seven pupils have been meeting, and exceeding national averages in reading, writing and numeracy.

Secondary school pupils also recorded improvement as S3 pupils have been exceeding the national average in listening and talking.

Councillor Clare Steel, convener of educational services, said: “On the whole, the figures are very encouraging and show that our children and young people are attaining well in their education in both primary and secondary schools.

“We will continue to work with our pupils and families to ensure every pupil reaches their full potential during their time at school and beyond.”

Attainment of children living in the most deprived areas also increased between 2021/22, which the report says is reducing the attainment gap between the most and least deprived areas.

While an overall strong increase in attainment at P1, P4, P7 and S3 was measured during the same period.

Councillor John Millar, vice convener of Educational Services, said: “Looking at the figures overall it is pleasing to see that we are matching and exceeding the national level in our schools.

“This is great testament to our teachers and support staff who work tirelessly to ensure every pupil is supported and encouraged to learn and achieve in our schools.”
