Dumbarton High Street was turned into Glebe Street on Saturday as local church members held a fruitful themed fundraiser day.

St Augustine’s Church members chose Maw Broon’s Street Party as the theme in order to celebrate the famous Scottish family’s 80th anniversary and prizes were dished out for ‘the best Broon in toon’ and ‘oor Wullie’.

The annual community fair featured all the usual stalls such as home-baking, bric-a-brac, used clothes, jams sweets, tombola and games and ran from 10am to 4pm.

Janette Barnes, the church secretary said: “We raised £726 so we are very, very pleased with that seeing as it’s hard to raise money in Dumbarton High Street.

“We try to have a theme; last year it was Pirates of Augustine and other years we had superheroes and things but this year we made it Maw Broon’s.

“The weather wasn’t bad and we were going to put stalls outside but decided against it to be safe as bad weather during an event like this one is no good.

“The money will go towards upkeep of the church – general maintenance, cleaning the gutters and things like that.

“People were able to get good bargains in the tea rooms too so it was great.”

The church hosts a range of community events and all money raised will be for the work of St. Augustine’s, St. Mungo’s Alexandria and those various community groups who use the hall.

Janette added: “We have 10-12 main organisers and an army of others who helped out by baking and setting up stalls and things.

“There were also stalls there raising money for Gambia and Palestine but most of the money raised was for the church.”
