Award-winning wildlife photographer and presenter Gordon Buchanan revisited his roots to support a Balloch children's hospice.

Gordon - who was born in Dumbarton and raised on the Isle of Mull - is known for his documentaries including 'Elephant Family and Me', as well as his work in several guest presenter stints on the BBC's Springwatch, Autumnwatch and Winterwatch programmes.

He treated the kids at the hospice and their families to a storytelling session, including retelling the experience of meeting a polar bear in the Arctic north of Norwaty, before leading those in attendance on a grizzly bear hunt.

Many of the children got into the spirit of the occasion, including painting their faces to transform themselves into bears for the day, and brought along their teddies to meet Gordon.

Gordon said: “It’s been a humbling experience learning about the important work that CHAS does in its hospices, and out with the community in hospitals. It’s been a fantastic experience meeting the families, and sharing my stories with them, and I’m proud to support such an amazing charity.”

CHAS cares for families and their babies, children and young people by offering palliative care, family respite and support at its two hospices, Robin House in Balloch and Rachel House in Kinross.

It has a CHAS at Home team, who bring its services into families’ homes throughout the whole of Scotland, as well as teams working in communities and hospitals across the country.

Gordon was given a tour of the facility by CHAS medical director Dr Pat Carragher, who said: “It was an absolute pleasure to welcome Gordon to the hospice and tell him about the vital work CHAS does to support babies, children and young people with life-shortening conditions, and their families.

“The children and families were captivated by his magical stories of living with bears. And they loved ‘going on a bear hunt’ with him in the gardens at Robin House.

“Three children die each week in Scotland from a life-shortening condition, and we are determined to reach and support every single one of those children and their families. Working with celebrity ambassadors, such as Gordon, helps us to reach and engage with new audiences, furthering our efforts to reach and support every family that needs us. These special experiences also create amazing moments of joy and memories for the families we care for, which is another important part of our work.”
