The crowds and competitors from around the world braved the rain on a traditional Scottish summer's day in Balloch for the 2017 Loch Lomond Highland Games.

Around 8,000 people are believed to have turned out for the popular annual event in Moss O'Balloch Park, which included a range of traditional highland games competitions including cycling, hammer throwing and heavy weights, as well as tossing the caber and a tug-of-war.

Alongside the sporting events, there was also a range of other events to keep visitors busy, including a 42 symphonic wind band from Belgium and Basque athletes performing stone lifting and wood cutting to keep the crowds entertained.

Pipers from Helensburgh, Clan Colquhoun and Tulliallan took part in the pipe band competitions through the day and dancers also performed traditional highland dances with immaculate costumes.

West Dunbartonshire Council Provost William Hendrie said: "What a fantastic day we have had today and it’s been lovely to meet so many people who have travelled here to enjoy this great event. The Loch Lomond Highland Games has always been a great family day out offering something for everyone to enjoy.

"I am proud of our Scottish heritage and the Games are a great way for tourists and visitors to get a true taste of Scotland. Well done to both the Games’ committee and West Dunbartonshire Leisure on organising yet another hugely successful event.”

Visitors from destinations across the world - including America, Italy, China and Canada - attended the event and enjoyed the traditional Scottish entertainment on show.

Major James Macrae, chieftain of the Loch Lomond Highland Games, said: "Once again I am delighted with this year’s event which has been a great success and has been very well attended. It is great testament to everyone involved in organising the Games, which attracts contestants and spectators from home and abroad every year.

"I would like to thank everyone who played their part in making this year’s games a huge success."
