DANCING youngsters at a Balloch street dance school have bagged top prizes at the 12th World Street Dance Championships in Glasgow.

Urbaniks Street Skool of Dance sent four teams to Glasgow’s SECC to compete alongside over 10,000 dancers from around the world including Japan, Canada and South Africa.

The dancers from Balloch, Dumbarton and Helensburgh attended the event which took place over four days from August 24 to 27.

Sara Smith from Dumbarton along with teammates Tio-Rayne Joseph, Lyla Forrester, Mia Punton each competed in the under 10s division and became world champions for their age group.

Erin and Rachael Donnelly from Balloch along with Isla Nicholson and Cara Beaton also became the champions for the Under 18s team.

Each of those who competed had to finish in 5th place or higher in the regional championships across the UK in order to qualify for the world championships.

Urbaniks have managed to compete at the world championships over the last five years and managed to take the under 16s quads title in 2015.

The dance school was founded by Paul and Pauline Joseph from Cardross who each have 20 years of dance training between them.

There was also success for Paul and Pauline's daughter, Honey Joseph, who came second in the world for her duet with fellow dancer Nicola McFall.

Honey also choreographed the dance school's routines for the championships.

Pauline told the Reporter: "I’m delighted with the results. It was a really tough one this year because the competition just gets harder and harder every year. The standard at world level is incredible and they all put in such incredibly hard work.

"There's no rest for the wicked though as the regional championships begin again next week so we are all back to work."

Urbaniks is attended by around 150 young dancers from Dumbarton, Balloch and Helensburgh and is Scotland’s first official street dance school.

After starting as a class of just five dancers, Urbaniks now runs classes in Balloch, Milngavie and Glasgow's West End.
