An Alexandria salon will mark World Down Syndrome Day with a heart-warming gesture.

Sleek and Unique will offer free trims and nail painting completely free of charge for children with Down’s syndrome on Wednesday, as well as donate the day’s takings to Down’s Syndrome Scotland.

Paul Haggerty, who owns the salon with partner Charlene Mooney, is a huge supporter of the charity.

His desire to help this particular cause stems from his closeness to a childhood friend who has the syndrome.

Paul said: “Since I was a child I’ve had a friend, Callum, who has Down’s. We’ve been friends for a long time.

“We have a page on our salon website that links to the charity’s site, and we have the usual donation tins in the salon, but we wanted to do something to raise some money.”

Customers will also have the opportunity to purchase teas, coffees, and fresh cakes in support of the charity too.

And Paul hopes this event will be the first of several other ways the salon hopes to help spread awareness.

He said: “People with Down’s aren’t completely different. They are normal, happy people, it’s just an extra chromosome. People just need a bit more awareness.”
