AN ALEXANDRIA youngster completed seven 5K runs for charity in just a week.

Luke Savage, 9, chose to take on the gruelling challenge in aid of Sport Relief from March 17 to 24, fitting in a run each day around school and an already packed sports schedule.

And the “competitive” Christie Park Primary pupil more than rose to his mission, covering a total of more than 21 miles with the support of his friends and family.

Mum Debbie Savage, 41, who works as a fitness instructor, says she was impressed at just how dedicated he was to his runs.

She said: “He loves all sports. He’s a really active wee boy.

“I do a lot of running. We’ve done the park runs together, and he said he wanted to do a challenge.

“He went out in the dark, rain and snow – it was quite amazing. I went out with him, it was good company.

“I thought he would get tired but he’d come in after school and football training and want to get out on a run.

“At one point he said to me, ‘I’m so proud to be raising the money for charity.’ “Before we started the challenge we’d talked about Sport Relief and talked about kids that don’t have a lot, so he was very aware of what he was doing it all for.”

The keen footballer completed his final run at Balloch Park on Saturday, March 24.

Debbie said: “He ran around with his friend Callum and they helped each other, they both did really well.

“He took the runs at his own pace but by the end of it you’d think he had been running all the time. He kept asking, ‘Mum, what’s the time?’ when he was running.

“I think he was all excited to finish the challenge, but I’ve never seen him so tired on the Sunday.”

And she says that she and Luke’s dad Jamie, 42, have never been so proud.

“My husband was amazed,” she added. “I think he’ll keep up with the running now, and I think he’ll want to do a challenge each year.”

Luke’s Sport Relief effort raised £500 for the appeal.
