NINE new two-bedroom flats will be built in Miller Road, Balloch, for social rent.

Cube Housing Association are the applicants and their request to build on the vacant land was approved by West Dunbartonshire Council.

Their application related to a site at the corner of Carrochan Road and Miller Road.

The site was formerly occupied by a building which had operated as a public house for a number of years before it was converted to a nursery.

It's understood that the building was originally used as a school.

On the opposite site of the road to the south and east are St Kessog's Primary School and Haldane Primary School.

The report stated: "Full planning permission is sought for the erection of nine residential units which would be two bedroom flats.

"The flats would be contained in a single building which would be three storeys in height."

When complete the building will face Carrochan Road and parking will be provided to the rear, accommodating a total of 14 spaces.

In the report appraisal it states: "The proposed redevelopment of the site for residential purposes is acceptable.

"The design, height and layout of the development is considered acceptable and the proposal would represent significant improvement given the present condition of the site.

"The development would therefore enhance the amenity of the surrounding area and there have been no technical problems identified."

It's understood that the finishing materials would include facing brick, concrete roof tiles, cladding panels and zinc finishing.

The building would also have a pitched roof with a feature gable to the front.

The report continues: "Overall, the proposal will help regenerate the area and provide a well designed development, providing much needed social rented accommodation to met an identified need."

There are 13 conditions attached to the approval of planning permission and building must work commence within three years of the approval date.

David MacKenzie, Cube director, said: “Our plans for Miller Road are at a very early stage but we hope to start work on these nine, two-bedroom homes in the summer.

“They are part of our strategic partnership with West Dunbartonshire Council, which will see Cube start work on 130 homes in West Dunbartonshire this year.”
