THE accounts for council housing need to be more accessible - because tenants are asking more questions.

West Dunbartonshire officials said their efforts to make the housing revenue account (HRA) more digestible have been successful in recent years, but now meant their residents were approaching them with more detailed and complex questions.

Council leader Councillor Jonathan McColl told the housing and communities meeting last week he was “slightly concerned” to hear tenants and residents were “unclear about the detail of the HRA”.

Peter Barry, strategic lead for housing and employability, said the work of previous committee chairman Cllr David McBride was “exemplary”.

He said: “What they have said is since 2008, they have been trying to get an understanding of the detail. Their knowledge has one up and they are asking more challenging questions.

“HRA finance is a very complicated landscape and sometimes we don’t explain as clearly as possible.”

He said more work would be done in the coming months to ensure those paying rent to the council understand where that money was going.
